I listened to Favourite Worst Nightmare by Arctic Monkeys at work today and the track Only Ones Who Know is really starting to stick out to me. I looked into some of Alex Turner's solo work for inspiration as well, and that's what I tried to emulate here. I was gonna make this a one-take thing (vocals and rhythm were done at the same time, to no click), but then I added some doubled vocals and sleepy slide guitar to make it more interesting. Lyrics are a combination of a few things (of course marking the first time I've used my classic anime girl inspiration this year, for one), and I think they form a nice little story. I tried to mix this as warmly as possible, too, so let me know if I succeeded.
lyrics
Verse 1:
Fly above the ocean floor
Careful when you sky dive
See the end of everything
Turn into a sunrise
We could be so many things
But they're all temporary
You can take the photograph
It's more than I can carry
Verse 2:
You were buried in a book
Up late at the cabin
Fueling me with ectasy
Let's talk and see what happens
I tried to help when I was her
Hiding in the closet
Anyway, I'm leaving soon
Don't forget to lock it
Chorus:
Out of the game
But it's always worth a try
Of course, a year ago
I wouldn't have said "hi"
She don't talk much
And that's rough
Cause even when she does
She doesn't say enough
Verse 3:
I can never read your eyes
What were your intentions?
If we both go on like this
When's the intervention?
Sailing silent on the river
Like you've always wanted
Careful where you set your things
I think the boat is haunted
Chorus:
Out of the game
But it's always worth a try
Of course, a year ago
I wouldn't have said "hi"
She don't talk much
And that's rough
Cause even when she does
She doesn't say enough

John Vermeersch: Guitar, slide guitar, vocals
Our first album is a raw piece of garage (er, basement) rock, heavily inspired by Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Weezer. It's rough, but it's free, and in my biased opinion, worth a listen. John Vermeersch
